CRAFT AND ACTIVITIES TO TRY AT HOME

On this page we would like to share with you some of the things that we have been doing. You might like to try these at home. Feel free to talk to the supervisors or email us for more ideas.

GRASS HEAD FRIENDS

These are really cool to do and the kids just love watching them grow. All you need is:

  • An old pair of tights, preferably woolen ones as they are more porous.
  • A small plastic potting pot.
  • Some potting mix
  • Grass seed
  • Old scraps of material, bead, ribbon or anything else you can think of to put on your grass head friends.
  • Hot glue gun
  • Some googly eyes - you can buy these at the two dollar shop.
  • To make your grass head friend, first dress him or her up with your bits of material, securing it to the pot with the hot glue gun.
  • Then cut out a piece of the tights about the size of a small dinner plate.
  • Put about a desert spoon full of grass seed right in the middle of the circle and then put your potting mix on top of this. Make sure that you keep the grass seed to the top of the head.
  • Pull the rest of the material tight up into a ball and secure with a rubber bank or string.
  • Next put a face your grass head with the hot glue gun.
  • Wet the head well and pop it into the pot.
  • Watch him grow
HANGING BOOK MOBILE

Really cool and easy thing for kids to do. Using old books to make art is useful and decorative. The next two projects are using this medium.

MATERIALS

  • Old hardcover book. Must have a decent amount of pages to get the right effect.
  • One pencil or a piece of dowling the length of the spine of the book.
  • Piece of thin ribbon
  • Hot glue gun.
INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Start with the spine closest to you and open the book.
  • With  the first page, fold both of the corners into the centre and make hard creases.

  • Continue to do this until the whole book has been folded this way. It is very important that you make your crease very sharp.  You may have to hold the creased pages down with another book while you are working.
  • Next take the hard cover off your book. Do this very carefully.
  • Now hot glue your pencil or dowling down the spine of your book. When you have stuck the pencil or dowling down,  lightly glue your ribbon to the pencil.
  • The next step is curling the book around the pencil or dowling. To do this you are going to have to work quite quickly as the hot glue dries very quickly.
  • Using quite a bit of hot glue, glue down both sides of the pencil or dowling, on top of the pencil and right to the edges of the spine.
  • Quickly fold the book back on itself and hold it tightly until the glue has dried.
  • Your project is now finished. Give yourself a pat on the back.
